The Cuban government releases & exiles prisoners of conscience

The Catholic Church and the Spanish government have secured the release of some
of Cuba's prisoners of conscience (a term defined by Amnesty International as
individuals in prison for their beliefs). Unfortunately, one condition of their
release is that they will not be able to remain in Cuba. Normando Hernandez, a
journalist who had been in prison since March of 2003 and featured in Oscar's
Cuba, was one of the prisoners released this week.

Dr. Oscar Biscet is one of a small group of courageous prisoners of conscience
who has declared that they will not agree to be released if forced exile is a
condition. Dr. Biscet has consistently stated that forced exile is not a just
end to years of unjust imprisonment. As we continue to spread their message, we
commend Dr. Biscet and the other prisoners of conscience who remain in prison
for their courage and fortitude.

We are happy to hear of the release of Normando, who had been in very bad health
for years, and send warm greeting to his wife, daughter and mother, Blanca.
